These chaplets are placed in a hole in the pattern and rammed up in the sand. When the pattern is withdrawn the chaplet protrudes a distance equal to the thickness of metal and the core bears on the end of the chaplet.
They are made with or without shoulder. The shoulder is an advantage, as it furnishes a better gauging point than the bottom of the hole which may become partly filled with dirt. They are also made with or without Breakoff Nicks above the shoulder.
